Battery Capacity & Sizing Glossary(30)

Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM)

A type of sealed lead-acid battery where electrolyte is absorbed in fiberglass mat separators. Maintenance-free but typically limited to 50% recommended Depth of Discharge.

Absorption Voltage

The constant voltage stage following bulk charge where current progressively tapers down until the battery reaches complete saturation (100% SoC).

Ampere-Hour (Ah)

A unit of electric charge measuring battery capacity over time. A 100Ah battery can theoretically deliver 100 amps of current for 1 hour, or 10 amps for 10 hours.

Battery Bank

An interconnected array of two or more individual batteries wired in series, parallel, or series-parallel to achieve a target operating voltage and energy storage capacity.

Battery Cycle Life

The total number of full charge-discharge cycles a battery can complete before its maximum functional storage capacity degrades below 80% of its original rating.

Bulk Charge Phase

The primary initial charging stage where maximum constant current is supplied to a depleted battery until terminal voltage reaches the target absorption threshold.

Coulombic Efficiency

The ratio of total amp-hours output during discharge to total amp-hours input required during charging (typically >99% for LiFePO4, 80-85% for Lead-Acid).

Days of Autonomy

The total number of consecutive days an off-grid battery bank can power system loads without receiving any charging input from solar panels or external power sources.

Deep Cycle Battery

A battery designed to undergo repeated deep discharge cycles (down to 50%–80% DoD) over extended time periods, unlike starting batteries designed for short bursts of high cranking current.

Depth of Discharge (DoD)

The percentage of total battery capacity that has been discharged relative to overall capacity. For example, discharging 80Ah from a 100Ah battery equates to an 80% DoD.

Energy Density

The amount of usable electrical energy stored per unit volume (Wh/L) or mass (Wh/kg) of a battery system.

Equalization Charge

A deliberate controlled overcharge performed on flooded lead-acid batteries to balance cell voltages and reverse stratification and sulfation buildup.

Float Voltage

The lowered continuous voltage level maintained by a charger on a fully charged battery to counter self-discharge without overcharging or losing electrolyte.

Flooded Lead-Acid (FLA)

Conventional vented lead-acid batteries requiring regular electrolyte maintenance through distilled water replenishment and periodic equalization charges.

Gel Battery

A lead-acid battery variant where liquid electrolyte is gelled with silica dust, preventing spills and making it resistant to vibration and evaporation in hot environments.

Internal Resistance (Ri)

The opposition to electric current flow within a battery cell, causing internal heating and voltage sag under heavy continuous load.

Kilowatt-Hour (kWh)

A unit of energy equal to 1,000 watts of power consumed or generated continuously for 1 hour. It is the standard metric used by utility companies and battery bank sizing calculators.

Lead-Acid Battery

Traditional rechargeable battery technology using lead plates submerged in sulfuric acid solution. Economical upfront but heavy with lower energy density and shorter cycle life.

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)

An advanced lithium-ion battery chemistry widely favored for solar energy storage due to its high thermal stability, long cycle life (3,000–6,000+ cycles), high efficiency, and safety.

Nominal Capacity

The factory-rated, theoretical total energy storage capacity of a battery cell or pack under standard test conditions before applying depth of discharge or temperature derating.

Nominal Voltage

The reported reference voltage of a cell or battery string (e.g., 3.2V for a LiFePO4 cell, 12.8V for a 4S pack, or 51.2V for a 16S server rack pack).

Round-Trip Efficiency

The percentage of total electrical energy retrieved during discharge compared to total electrical energy injected to charge the battery bank.

Self-Discharge Rate

The gradual percentage reduction in battery charge state occurring naturally while the battery remains isolated with no connected loads or active charging sources.

Server Rack Battery

A pre-built modular 48V/51.2V LiFePO4 battery pack designed to fit standard 19-inch equipment racks, featuring integrated Smart BMS and CAN/RS485 communication ports.

State of Charge (SoC)

The remaining level of energy stored in a battery expressed as a percentage of its total rated capacity (0% = empty, 100% = full).

State of Health (SoH)

A percentage metric reflecting a battery's current physical condition and remaining energy storage capability relative to its fresh factory specs.

Thermal Derating

The reduction in effective battery capacity or maximum allowed charging/discharging current applied when ambient temperatures drop below or rise above optimal thresholds.

Usable Capacity

The actual energy (in Ah or Wh) that can be safely withdrawn from a battery without violating recommended Depth of Discharge limits or triggering BMS low-voltage cutoffs.

Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA)

Sealed maintenance-free lead-acid batteries equipped with safety pressure relief valves (includes both AGM and Gel chemistries).

Watt-Hour (Wh)

A unit of energy calculated by multiplying electrical power in Watts by time in hours (Wh = Watts × Hours).

Solar Array & System Sizing Glossary(30)

Albedo Effect

The fraction of solar light reflected off surrounding surfaces (like snow, light gravel, or concrete roofs) onto solar panel surfaces.

Azimuth Angle

The compass orientation direction facing a solar array relative to true south (in the Northern Hemisphere) or true north (in the Southern Hemisphere).

Bifacial Solar Panel

Solar modules designed to absorb light and generate electricity from both front and rear surfaces using reflected ground glare (albedo).

Blocking Diode

A diode installed in series to prevent reverse current from flowing back from a battery bank into solar panel arrays at night.

Bypass Diode

Internal protection diodes installed in solar panel junction boxes allowing electrical current to bypass shaded cell groups, protecting them from hot-spot damage.

Half-Cut Solar Cells

Modified Sine Wave Inverter

Photovoltaic (PV)

Polycrystalline Solar Panel

Pure Sine Wave Inverter

PWM (Pulse Width Modulation)

Solar Array

Solar Charge Controller

Solar Inverter

Standard Test Conditions (STC)

Temperature Coefficient

Tilt Angle

TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact)

Arc Fault

Branch Connectors (MC4)

Specialized weather-resistant Y-connectors used to join multiple solar panel strings together in parallel configurations cleanly.

Busbar

A heavy-duty solid metal strip or block (typically copper or brass) used to distribute high electrical currents to multiple branch circuits or parallel battery strings.

Cable Resistance (R)

The physical resistance inherent to wire materials (measured in Ohms per 1,000 ft or km) which produces heat and voltage drop under load.

Combiner Box

An outdoor junction box housing individual string fuses, surge protection devices, and parallel busbars to consolidate solar array wiring into a single main cable feed.

Conduit

Protective rigid or flexible tubing (PVC, EMT, liquid-tight) installed to route and protect solar and battery cables from weather and physical damage.

Cross-Sectional Area (mm²)

The metric standard for measuring conductor wire thickness, defining copper capacity alongside AWG equivalents.

DC Disconnect Switch

A safety switch capable of breaking high-voltage DC currents safely to isolate solar panels or battery banks during system maintenance.

Equipotential Bonding

Electrically connecting all metallic solar frames, rails, and enclosures together so they sit at equal zero-voltage potential to prevent shock risks.

Ground Fault Protection (GFPD)

Safety devices designed to detect unintended current leaks between energized system conductors and grounded equipment frames.

Grounding Rod

MC4 Connectors

Parallel Wiring

Short Circuit

Single-Phase AC

Split-Phase AC

Strain Relief

Active Balancer

An electronic board that actively transfers charge from higher-voltage cells to lower-voltage cells using inductors or capacitors with high efficiency.

Battery Management System (BMS)

BMS MOSFETs

Bottom Balancing

Flexible Busbar

FR4 Epoxy Insulation

Lithium Plating

Low Temperature Charge Cutoff

Over-Voltage Protection (OVP)

Continuous Discharge Current

Continuous Power

The steady power level a battery, solar array, or inverter can deliver indefinitely without thermal shutdown or damage.

Duty Cycle

The percentage of time an electrical device or load operates active versus idle within a given total time period.

Fire Retardant Enclosure

Floating Ground

Inrush Current

Voltage Sag

Annual Degradation Rate

The expected annual percentage reduction in equipment output (typically ~0.5% per year for solar panels, 2%–3% for lithium storage capacity).

Apparent Power (VA)

The product of RMS voltage and current in an AC system (measured in Volt-Amperes), defining the total capacity required from inverters.

Capacity Retention

The percentage of original factory storage capacity remaining in a battery after a defined number of operational discharge cycles.

Clipping / Inverter Clipping

Coulomb Counting

Peukert's Exponent (k)

A numerical value describing how much a battery's usable capacity shrinks as discharge current rises, relative to its rated Ah at a slow, standard test rate. Typical values run about 1.02–1.08 for LiFePO4 (barely affected) and 1.1–1.3 for flooded/AGM lead-acid (significantly affected).

Power Factor (PF)

The ratio of real working power (Watts) to apparent power (Volt-Amps) in AC electrical systems, affected by inductive loads like motors (PF = 0.8).

Power Tolerance Rating

The manufacturer variance range for nameplate wattage output (e.g., -0%/+5% sorting means a 400W panel generates at least 400W up to 420W out of the box).

PTC (PVUSA Test Conditions)

A realistic field performance metric for solar panels (1,000 W/m² light, 45°C operating cell temp, 1 m/s wind) yielding lower output numbers than STC.

Reactive Power (VAR)

The non-working power stored and returned by inductive magnetic fields (motors, transformers) in AC power setups.

Real Power (Watts)

The actual usable electrical power performing mechanical work or heat in an AC load circuit (Real Power = VA × Power Factor).

Real-World Derating

The practical engineering reduction applied to factory nameplate specs (typically 15%–25%) to reflect real installation losses like heat, dust, and aging.

RMS Voltage (Root Mean Square)

The effective equivalent DC voltage value of an AC sine wave (e.g., 120V AC RMS reaches ~170V peak positive potential).

Self-Heating Effect

Temperature rises occurring inside high-internal-resistance batteries during fast charging or high continuous discharge (P = I²R).

Short-Circuit Capacity

The peak current a battery bank can release into a dead short fault path, dictating Class T fuse AIC requirements.

Shunt Calibration

Setting zero-current baseline and battery capacity limits inside smart battery monitors to eliminate cumulative State of Charge measurement drift.

SoC Drift

The gradual deviation between reported and true battery state of charge over time caused by small sensor inaccuracies during incomplete charge cycles.

Soiling Loss

Stratification
